Significant changes to Spotify Web API
Spotify has announced significant changes to its Web API that will restrict third-party developers from accessing key features, including song and artist recommendations, audio analysis, and algorithmically created playlists. A Spotify spokesperson emphasized that these changes are part of ongoing efforts to address security challenges. But the restrictions are less about security and more about preventing the use of Spotify's data for training AI models, aren't they?
These APIs could be used to create artificial intelligence music recommendation models, which Spotify itself has been developing in recent years, so is it essentially just taking out potential competitors? These changes will only affect developers who have more limited API access than official Spotify partners. Developers who have previously applied for an extension will still be able to use these API endpoints; however, it does not appear that Spotify warned developers these changes were coming.
Do you think this move undermines the potential for innovative apps that don't necessarily rely on artificial intelligence? There are concerns that this change could stifle creativity and limit the development of useful tools that improve Spotify's performance
